What teaching Art to Adults is teaching me…
I have been an art teacher for nearly 3 decades now, and in that time I’ve mostly taught teenagers and young children. The past 6 months has seen me teaching adults through my Calming Art Workshops and so I thought it was interesting to reflect on the differences.
Art as a moving meditation
I wanted to discuss a little deeper, why you may feel so relaxed while making art. I’ve been delving into the neuroscience but also what we know about moving meditation and how important moments of stillness are in our day and how refreshing and deeply calmly the flow state is.
I find drawing and watercolour are particularly helpful in getting me into a flow state. In a busy day, a busy life, I often find it hard to switch off my thoughts. It’s like the momentum from full speed to stillness is too much of an adjustment.
